I think Australians in general love a day off. You have to admit that there are very few things better than having a BBQ on Australia day, spending time with family over Christmas and taking it easy on the 10 other public holidays we have each year. Then we get to top it off with up to four weeks annual leave, a chance to get away from the stress of work, in favor of doing as little as possible.  But what I love is that each of these events has the ability to teach us something; how lucky we our to live in this country, the value of family and friends, the need we have for relaxation. These days can give us identity and remind us of our values. For the Jews it was much the same.

This year at evening church we will be exploring both the Jewish calendar and the traditional church calendar. The Jewish feasts were the focal point for the nation of Israel, these feasts which were ordained by God were there to bolster your faith and enlarge your understanding of God’s work amongst man and His divine plan. These feasts were observed by Jesus in the New Testament, feasts which framed part of the ministry of Jesus, feasts not only observed but also explained and expanded upon (John 7:2, John 10:22). Sure we are under a new covenant but these feasts speak of life and history as Paul talks about in Romans when believers enrich their understanding of the Jewish feasts with a genuine and humble spirit they show “respect to the root” (Romans 11:16). To ignore them, I think is to deny part of our Christian heritage and reduce the work of Christ and to not fully understand the work of God.

Going hand in hand with this exploration into the feasts of Israel we will be exploring the church calendar, something others call the cycle of liturgical seasons, a cycle that has been followed by countless Christians for many a year. A cycle, which in part we celebrate in Christmas and Easter. A cycle that has so much more meaning and heart to it, a calendar that is designed to makes us think and grow in our faith. I’m am looking forward to journeying with you this year.
